Memberships not only offer year-round entry but contribute to the provision of
equipment, plants and amenities for the house and garden to preserve it for
future generations.
The University of Birmingham turns 125 this year – and we’re celebrating by highlighting 125 treasures to discover in our house and garden: our ‘Wonders of Winterbourne’.
The house was built for John Nettlefold, a pioneer of early housing reform in
Birmingham at a time when the city had a serious lack of decent homes for
working people. John and his wife Margaret were from prestigious local
families who had made their living in industry. Choosing their house to be
designed in the Arts and Crafts style reflected their modern outlook.

Further Than Memory Can Reach: An Exhibition by Carolyn Blake
24 February – 14 September
Our latest exhibition, “Further Than Memory Can Reach” by Carolyn Blake, takes us on a journey around the grounds of Winterbourne House from the time it was built to the present. Along the way, we encounter the people who lived, worked and played here, and those who visit and care for the garden today.
