Rudge Wood Horticulture CIC

Winterbourne’s NCFE‑accredited Level 2 Certificate in Garden Design equips learners with the essential creative and practical skills to design private, public, and show gardens. Throughout the course, learners develop several design projects with guidance from industry professionals and tutors from Rudge Wood Horticulture CIC.

On successful completion, learners achieve an NCFE‑accredited Level 2 Certificate in Art and Design.

When: Wednesdays, 10am – 3.15pm. Starts September 2026 (32-weeks, Birmingham term-time only)
Where: Winterbourne House and Garden, Winterbourne Centre for Horticulture

What to expect

During this Level 2 Garden design course, you will learn:

  • Design techniques, materials, tools and equipment
  • How to develop design and craft ideas
  • Producing commercial design and craft briefs
  • How to produce work in response to briefs

Througout the course you will create a portfolio of work to be assessed by your tutors. This work will also be quality assured by external moderators,.

There will be a number of assignments to complete and pass in order to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Garden Design.

This course helps learners develop an understanding of garden design and the garden design. In particular, this course will be a good introduction if you’re looking to pursue a career in garden design or design and execute show gardens at a semi-professional level.

Applications for this course will be reviewed by Winterbourne House and Garden’s Horticultural education team, who may invite you for an in-person conversation to ensure the course you have applied for meets your experience and aligns with what you hope to achieve from studying with us.  

This qualification can help you to progress into a career in garden design and horticulture.

Some learners may go on to complete further study at Level 3.

Many learners go on to work in the garden design industry, either for larger companies or on a freelance basis. You will develop skills that can also be applied in other professional horticultural settings, such as working in private or public gardens.

This Level 2 Certificate in Garden Design will be taught by tutors from Rudge Wood Horticulture CIC.

Get to know Darren and Helen

Darren Rudge is a respected horticultural educator, designer and broadcaster. With a career spanning over three decades, Darren has taught countless students in vocational and community settings. He is also known for his media work, sharing expert advice on BBC radio and beyond.

As a Professional Associate for RHS Qualifications, Darren examines and verifies practical qualifications nationally, ensuring the next generation of horticulturalists meet the highest standards. Alongside this, he runs a successful garden design consultancy, working with landscapers and contractors to create innovative outdoor spaces.

Helen Wood brings a wealth of expertise in horticulture, teaching and assessment. Since 2014, Helen has worked with RHS Qualifications as a Professional Associate, where she plays a key role in marking, setting exam papers, and leading the Level 2 theory team.

Her passion for education and community-led projects has shaped the development of inclusive training and horticultural initiatives. Through her consultancy, Helen supports individuals, organisations and communities to design and sustain accessible green spaces that bring long-term benefits.

When studying at Winterbourne, you will receive tuition from horticultural and garden design industry experts, as well as additional support from Winterbourne’s team of gardeners and a dedicated Learning Officer. You will study in our purpose‑built education building, the Winterbourne Centre for Horticulture, and have the opportunity to work on live and mock garden design briefs.

All students studying at Winterbourne will receive a Learner Membership to the house and garden throughout their studies. You are also eligible to apply for RHS student membership.

As a member of Rudge Wood’s learning community, you have the opportunity to develop links with horticultural employers.

Students studying at Winterbourne House and Garden are not classified as University of Birmingham students and therefore do not have access to the university’s general student support and benefits.
