The Winterbourne Press
Keeping the art of print alive
Step inside The Winterbourne Press, home to several 19th century printing presses and a treasure trove of printing artefacts.
Printed by hand, inspired by history
The Press collection was established in 2012, when Winterbourne salvaged a few printing presses in Birmingham that were at risk of being scrapped. You can now see the antique presses being operated by volunteers to print bags and cards, which are available to buy in the Winterbourne Gift Shop, just next door.
The printing press in Birmingham
Birmingham was once the epicentre of the printing industry, and a driving force behind its evolution. Find out more about Birmingham’s links to the printing industry through the Centre for Printing History and Culture – a joint initiative between University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University.
Winterbourne Typographic Library
Winterbourne houses its very own Typographic Library, a specialist collection of books exploring the history of print, typography and design. Established by a Birmingham City University professor, the library found its home here in 2023 alongside the growing Winterbourne Press. Access is by appointment for reference only. Please send us an enquiry to arrange a visit.
