Our latest exhibition, “Further Than Memory Can Reach” by Carolyn Blake, takes us on a journey around the grounds of Winterbourne House from the time it was built to the present. Along the way, we encounter the people who lived, worked and played here, and those who visit and care for the garden today.
For many years, Carolyn Blake’s paintings have been prompted by memories and journeys, both long distance and local. She records the “everyday”, bringing to life the inconsequential and unmemorable. Just looking can often prompt thoughts and recollections which are unique to that particular moment.
The title “Further Than Memory Can Reach” comes from W. G. Sebald’s book “The Rings of Saturn”, an exploration of the thoughts and memories prompted by Sebald’s walk through a familiar landscape.
Carolyn Blake is a painter and art educator with an MA in Fine Art from City & Guilds School of Art. She lives and works in Birmingham, and has exhibited widely since 2008.
