Strelitzia reginae or bird of paradise flower originates from South Africa where it flowers every Summer, as it is a plant from the Southern Hemisphere its flowering period is therefore during our winter and spring. Its flowers are very striking, with 3 bright orange petals with a blue flash which resembles a bird of paradise

Plant Spotlight – Dawn redwood
We have several specimens of Metasequoia glyptostroboides, or the dawn redwood, here at Winterbourne, mostly planted in 1952. They can be seen in the Woodland Walk and Stream Lawn. Several handsome specimens even form an avenue running either side of the stream which flows beneath the Japanese Bridge near the Sandstone Rock Garden. Dawn

We’ve made good use of the recent closed period and given the Carnivorous Plant House a mini-makeover ready for re-opening. Glasshouse Area Supervisor, Abby, has been busy filling the lower benches beneath our brilliant pitcher plant display with shade-loving tropicals like bromeliads, Tradescantia and begonias.
