On the 23rd March 2020 the University of Birmingham followed government advice and moved the whole of its campus to ‘restricted operations’. This meant only essential services remained open – like research laboratories working on a vaccine against Covid-19, or staff supporting the small number of students who were still in residence.
They are now moving into a phased schedule of re-opening, of which Winterbourne is part. We are pleased to announce that the Garden has been included in the first phase of opening and will welcome Winterbourne Members plus staff and students of the University of Birmingham from Monday 6th July. We will be open 7 days a week from 10.30am to 4pm, with last entry at 3.30pm. A valid University pass or Membership card must be shown.

Why is Winterbourne garden not open to the general public?
As part of the Campus reopening schedule Winterbourne has been granted permission to open the Garden, as part of the first wave, to Staff and Students of the University and also those with a valid Winterbourne Membership. This will give us time to establish our first phase of opening, allow for adjustments, cater for social distancing challenges and ensure we can control visitor capacity to within our current reduced site limits. We’re working hard to ensure everyone on site will be as safe as possible.
I’m a member of UoB staff/student, can I bring my family?
Your staff/student card entitles you and your children under 16 to entry. Unfortunately, as we are not open for general admissions, we are currently unable to welcome spouses and extended family. They can of course join as a Member should they wish to visit with you.
How do I become a Member?
We are making Membership of Winterbourne available to purchase online. Visit our membership page for further details.
I have a 1+1 membership can I still bring a guest?
Yes, at the moment all membership cards are valid as normal with the usual number of attendees.
My Membership has lapsed…can I renew it online?
What is happening in relation to my current Membership and the time you have been closed?
A mailing is going out to all Members this week with a Summer Magazine and a letter explaining all about our re-opening and your Membership extension options.
When will the house open?
The house will be assessed as part of the ongoing phased re-opening of Campus. It is anticipated that this will not be until at least September.
What about the tea room and shop?
The shop and bookshop will reopen from 3rd of August and we are awaiting confirmation on a takeaway tearoom offer
I was booked on an event, talk or workshop. Are events cancelled? Can I get a refund?
Regrettably, all events, talks and workshops are now cancelled until further notice.
If you have pre-booked, you will be refunded.
We are now working our way through refunds of online payments so please do check your credit card statements and Paypal accounts.
In addition we are contacting those who have paid on site by card to process over the telephone refunds. If you have not heard from us yet please email email@example.com providing a daytime telephone number and a member of staff will be in touch.

I have a Travelzoo voucher for Winterbourne House and Garden. Can I still use it?
We will be accepting those with Travelzoo vouchers from 1st September and the redemption period has been extended to 22 December 2020.

As a team of gardeners and curators, we love to share everyday stories from our daily routine here. Although that routine is now very different, we’d still like to share news and expertise with you.
