BBC Gardeners' World Garden has new lease of life
Wednesday 12th October
We are very pleased to announce that the Greenacre site, familiar to viewers of the BBC's hit television programme Gardeners' World, will now be managed by Winterbourne House and Garden.
Owned by King Edward's School, the beautiful site will become a community garden where local groups will work on a number of projects. Both King Edward's and local Lordswood School have already started work on their own projects, and the Birmingham Association of Youth Groups (BAYC) are underway with ideas for their own work in the space.
As the University of Birmingham has such a strong commitment to community engagement and working collaboratively with a wide range of local groups, having this garden specific for that purpose is wonderful news. Visiting the site this week, girls from Lordswood starting thinking about how their Business project will link to their activities on site. Tasked with coming up with ways to make profitable businesses from land and potentially garden cultivation, they explored the space with teaching staff and Headteacher Jane Götschel.
As a community space, the garden will not usually be open to the public. Look out for opportunities throughout the year for behind the scenes tours of projects underway!
Further information on the garden will appear under 'Education' alongside the hugely successful Urban Veg project.
Exciting news about the Old Kitchen!
One of the most common items of feedback we get from our visitors is how much they would like to be able to see the Old Kitchen as part of their visit. We have been working over the last few weeks to make the Old Kitchen another exhibition room and are now pleased to announce as of 1st September it will be open daily to garden visitors.
Entrance to the courtyard and kitchen is through the garden and will be signposted.
