Winterbourne is currently one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts Garden, home to striking colour-themed borders, a Walled Garden, unusual hazelnut tunnel and 1930’s Japanese Bridge and Tea House. Winterbourne House was built in 1903 for Birmingham industrialist John Sutton Nettlefold of the GKN screw making dynasty and his wife Margaret Chamberlain. Nettlefold held several prominent civic roles within the city and was a nationally important figure in housing reform. Winterbourne’s beautiful seven acre garden was designed by Margaret Chamberlain, taking inspiration from Gertrude Jekyll. Boasting over 6,000 plant species, the Grade II listed garden holds many attractions to look at – including an unusual sandstone garden, streamside planting, beautiful glasshouses and a kitchen garden. Guided tours can be arranged during normal opening times and take approximately an hour. Tours give a unique insight in to the history of Winterbourne and can also be tailored to a group’s specific interest. There is also a gift shop, plant sales, art gallery and the Terrace Tearoom, serving light lunches and cream teas. School group tours can also be accommodated.
