Tea Room

Adjacent to the exhibition rooms on the ground floor of the house is Winterbourne's delightful terrace tea room. Serving tea, cakes and other refreshments throughout the day, hot meals and salads are available from 12-2pm, with sandwiches served until 2.30pm.

Due to the nature of the seating inside the tea room, it is not possible to reserve tables for groups. Please also bear in mind that for groups of more than around 6 people, seating together is not possible.

To cater for the change in seasons, Winterbourne's tea room offers a Summer and Winter Menu. During colder months expect hearty pies with roasted vegetables.
When warmer weather comes, tasty salads with light dressings make enjoying a meal out on the terrace a true summer treat.

Although the tea room is not open outside of usual opening hours, special Supper Clubs run throughout the year and are listed on our events page. Usually with a table d'hote menu and table service, visitors have the chance to experience Winterbourne after dark.
Other events include cheese and wine evenings and themed dining.

Outside of opening hours, bookings can sometimes be made to hire out the tea room and terrace area for private functions. Click on 'Venue Hire' at the top of this page to find out more.

Picnics
We understand that some of our visitors may choose to bring a picnic rather than buying something to eat from our tea room. If you do bring food to the garden, please leave our tea room furniture and terrace for paying customers, carry your own rubbish away to be recycled and only sit on the lawned area of garden beyond the pergola. Portable chairs and tables are not permitted in the garden. Please help us to keep our garden looking tidy and well kept.

Group Visits

Winterbourne is currently one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts Garden, home to striking colour-themed borders, a Walled Garden,  unusual hazelnut tunnel and 1930’s Japanese Bridge and Tea House.

Winterbourne House was built in 1903 for Birmingham industrialist John Sutton Nettlefold of the GKN screw making dynasty and his wife Margaret Chamberlain. Nettlefold held several prominent civic roles within the city and was a nationally important figure in housing reform.

Winterbourne’s beautiful seven acre garden was designed by Margaret Chamberlain, taking inspiration from Gertrude Jekyll. Boasting over 6,000 plant species, the Grade II listed garden holds many attractions to look at – including an unusual sandstone garden, streamside planting, beautiful glasshouses and a kitchen garden.

Guided tours can be arranged during normal opening times and take approximately an hour. Tours give a unique insight in to the history of Winterbourne and can also be tailored to a group’s specific interest. There is also a gift shop, plant sales, art gallery and the Terrace Tearoom, serving light lunches and cream teas.

School group tours can also be accommodated. If you are interested in organising a school trip to Winterbourne please get in touch using the contact details below.
