Urban Veg

URBAN VEG

Winterbourne House and Garden has an ongoing commitment to contribute to, and work with, our local communities and this year we are running a community based project in conjunction with the charitable organisation, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, with funding from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

As a public garden, linked to the University of Birmingham, we are aware of our duty to educate our visitors about the environment and the opportunities we all have to help protect it. For our new project, Urban veg, we are working with members from Birmingham’s Islamic Communities to grow vegetables in the Walled Kitchen Garden at Winterbourne. Participants in the project will be taught the art of growing their own food through sustainable methods by our dedicated Garden team. In order to showcase the work undertaken during this project we will be hosting an exhibition, in 2012, of photographs and artwork produced by participants.

PROJECT UPDATE

Since Urban veg began in March, each Wednesday has seen lots of activity by our 17 volunteers. As a result of sowing seed early under the protection of glass, the project plot is already quite full with vegetable plants. Located in the walled garden and at the bottom of the lean to glasshouse, the plot is filled with everything from garlic and mangetout to turnips and potatoes.

If you haven’t already seen the plot make sure you call by on your next visit.
